49 Communications
exhibition, Metamorphosi, September 1999 THE TITLE It's a variant on the title of the book by Alberto Savinio printed by the author after the bombings of Milan in 1994: Ascolta il tuo cuore, città Biblioteca Adelphi. THE COMMUNICATIONS PROJECTThis foresees the creation of 49 talking portraits of Milanese citizens who contribute to making Milan an important city: personalities from the worlds of culture, art, science, design, fashion and economy as well as citizens who have some great stories to tell. They will all be asked to answer the same questions about: 1. The city of Milan in their childhood and their first impact with it. 2. The city of Milan that opened its doors to them. 3. The city of Milan that was the launch site for their career. 4. The city of Milan in their human and family relationships. 5. The city of Milan that doesn't work. 6. What they would like it to be. 7.
Dulcis in fundo: a dream project they have for Milan. They will be requested to reveal their memories but above all to share both their images, hopes and concrete experiences. THE TRANSACTIVE MONUMENT The talking portraits will form a TV monument that will be become available in the spring of the year 2000. It will look like a sort of tower of Babel or else it will be a heart to divide up into little pieces to be distributed all over the city. Art
and Communication high schools in Milan have been invited to create
a practicable project in order to render this message accessible to
young people. THE 49 VIDEO PORTRAIT At the moment our thoughts rest with: Umberto

LISTEN TO YOUR HEART, CITY The idea was inspired by our surroundings, in a part of the city in which the oldest arena of the Roman empire was erected. Nowadays dozens of large and small studios, of new professions, of people of all races, colours, social levels and different cultures, all cohabit a few metres away from each other. It's a concentrate of Milan. One of the side effects is that people here meet to share their projects and their disappointments. Together they dream of new possibilities for the future. The language spoken here is universal and concrete. It's the language spoken by people who produce, and work with, images, communication, design, computers, cinema and television. Metamorphosi is situated on a corner of via Scaldasole and via Arena. It's a multimedia studio that, over the years, has become a reference point for many authors, directors, designers, managers and university lectures. The idea of a simple and effective project that could be shared with all of the city, especially now that it is looking for a new common language and for a heart in which to recognize itself, was born in and outside of Metamorphosi. The
heart exists. It's made up of many components: economy, finance, publishing,
science, technology, medicine, architecture, fashion, art, design …
it's a heart that makes Milan a great European city. And get others to listen to it. That's how the idea has become a project. On October 7, the project will be presented at Metamorphosi. You are invited to share it. |
